Drie mooie dames, vergezeld door vier stoere heren, die je nu eens kippenvel bezorgen, en je dan weer doen dansen. Een zangeres die soms gothic sferen oproept, terwijl de viool je doet vermoeden dat je tussen de zigeuners zit. De soms warme, dan weer ijle klanken van een fluit kent haar opponenten in de bas en didge die de aardse diepte zoeken. Dan klinkt er een Ierse bouzouki op een opzwepende drum met een nog wilder didgeridoo ritme.
Zomaar een aantal impressies en klanken die voorbij komen als je kijkt en luistert naar Inner Strength. Opzwepende, dansbare nummers en aanstekelijke, folky popsongs gemengd met serene, soms mystieke ballads. De band korter omschrijven doet te kort aan de veelzijdigheid.
Achtergronden
De band wordt gevormd door muzikanten met allerlei pluimages en diverse achtergronden in de muziek. Zo zingt Noortje ook in de progressieve rock-band In-Tension. Violiste Cora speelt in zigeuner-orkest Korusonas en Klezmerband Klezmajeur. Gitarist Michiel heeft een conservatorium opleiding klassieke gitaar en geeft gitaarles.
Drummer Marc heeft gespeeld in Nederland en Vlaanderen met diverse acts en pop-bands, maar bijv. ook als begeleiding bij Liliane St Pierre. Didgeridoospeler Roland, stond op het Sfinks festival in België met Australische top didge-spelers en staat regelmatig in theaters door heel Nederland met diverse producties zoals het Brabants Amateur Danstheater en meerdere koren.
Al deze invloeden vermengen zich in Inner Strength tot een sfeer en klank die nauwelijks in woorden is te omschrijven, maar die ervaren, gezien, gevoeld en gehoord moet worden.
Hoogtepunten
In 2003 is de band het voorprogramma van de legendarische Britse folkrockband Fairport Convention. In 2004 verschijnt de mini-cd ‘Driven’ en vervolgens staan ze op Folkwoods, het grootste folkfestival van Nederland en op NaFirBolg in België. In september 2005 verschijnt ‘Meltemi’ de eerste full-cd. In 2006 speelt de band op festivals als Elastiek, Mondial en Doe Dans. In de winter van 2006-2007 staat de band in diverse theaters door het land, o.a. met Moya Brennan.

Zoals Wim van Leest in BN de Stem schreef: "De folkmuziek van Inner Strength doet zo nu en dan een tikje ‘gothic’ aan. Dat komt vooral door het hoge stemgeluid van zangeres Noortje van de Voort. Die stem is prachtig en helder, maar heeft tegelijkertijd ook iets hypnotiserends. Instrumentaal staat de muziek van Inner Strength als een huis. … Van de truttigheid, die nogal eens met folk uit de Lage Landen wordt geassocieerd, is geen sprake."
